Mustangs repeat as Canalta Cup champions

The Flin Flon Bombers never expected the defending champion Melfort Mustangs to roll over in the Canalta Cup Final. And they aren’t. The series is a best-of-three affair, tied at two wins apiece, as the Bombers head into Melfort Friday night.

Flin Flon Bombers forward Joel Kocur wants to conclude his junior career as a champion. “I have a very high drive to go out on top in my last season, and to win a championship for this organization and fans would be really special,” Kocur said.

Birdies were flying both inside and out last weekend as spring descended on the area, and the Flin Flon School Division hosted 120 badminton players for a major tournament.

Eleven points stood between them in the regular season. Now four wins separate both the Flin Flon Bombers and Melfort Mustangs from the Canalta Cup. The defending champion Mustangs have earned a second straight berth in the SJHL final.

Athletes have to be ready when called upon. The Flin Flon Bombers are headed to their first SJHL final since 1993 thanks to players such as Rylee Zimmer, Zac Robidoux and Cory Thomas delivering when the opportunity arose.
