Birdies were flying both inside and out last weekend as spring descended on the area, and the Flin Flon School Division hosted 120 badminton players for a major tournament.
Sixty-five senior varsity players and 55 junior varsity players took part, with athletes travelling to Flin Flon from Thompson, Grand Rapids, The Pas, Swan River and Snow Lake.
“This is the largest number we have had competing in this tournament locally as far back as I can remember,” wrote assistant superintendent Dean Grove in a report on the event.
To accommodate all the athletes, games were held in four school gymnasiums.
“Six hundred and forty-seven games of badminton were played as every player was allowed to play in all three events, which doesn’t happen in many tournaments,” Grove wrote.
Over the weekend, the school division also hosted a Manitoba Games volleyball regional development camp and a Manitoba Provincial Team volleyball ID camp in Creighton, in partnership with Creighton Community School.
