Flin Flon's season ends with 2-1 loss to Melfort

Mustangs repeat as Canalta Cup champions

The Flin Flon Bombers kept the pressure on for all 60 minutes of Game 6 of the Canalta Cup Sunday but were unable to unseat the reigning champion Melfort Mustangs at the Whitney Forum.

Richard Palmer was a wall at the Melfort net, stopping a total of 46 shots to ensure the Mustangs win.

The first period ended scoreless despite Flin Flon driving the puck again and again into the Melfort end. Palmer stopped 21 shots in that period alone.

Alex Smith opened the scoring at 7:05 in the second, his seventh of the series. Joel Kocur and Brandon Switzer notched the assists.

Seven-and-a-half minutes later Melfort's Travis Mayan scored to tie up the game.

With Flin Flon shorthanded 17:25 into the third, Melfort's Wyatt Hinson  found the net to put the Mustangs ahead 2-1.

All three goals in the game were scored on the power play.

Zac Robidoux, who was a force in net during Game 5's overtime frame, stopped 31 shots for Flin Flon in Game 6.

The Mustangs head to Estevan for Game 1 of the Western Conference Championships on Friday, April 29.

The Reminder will have more coverage of the Bombers' season in this week's editions.
