Alright – the campaign is over and the votes have been, for the most part at least, counted. Let’s pick apart the bones. First off, to all political parties who still do this – stop calling people’s homes.

Dahlias are the national flower of Mexico, where they originated. This perennial grows from tuberous roots which were grown for food by the Aztecs.

Several plants we grow outdoors during the summer store food in bulbs or tubers (thick, fleshy roots) to survive a dormant period, which may be a dry or a cold season in their native environment.

Since this is our last issue before the federal election takes place Monday, this will be my last chance to speak with you directly through this column before the results are announced.

Having grown up in Flin Flon, I have a rather intense love-hate relationship with my hometown. Most of us seem to have that. That said, the good in Flin Flon far outweighs the bad.

Now that the provincial election is in the rear-view mirror, let’s talk about how dismal the turnout for this year’s vote was. Province-wide, barely half of all registered voters actually cast a ballot. That’s pitiful enough.

As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, the garden may need some extra attention. Whether you are growing vegetables, perennials or annuals, it’s time to watch nighttime temperatures and to be prepared to act.

Now that the provincial election is over, let me start by congratulating the winning party and candidates, while also thanking the losing parties and candidates for their commitment to the democratic process.

People in our North need better internet access - this is the clear message I have received in my visits throughout our region. The federal government plays a key role as the regulator of telecommunications.

The last article discussed daylilies, as well as the true lilies, tiger lilies and asiatic lilies. There are several other true lilies with a scaly bulb, some of which are hardy for us.
