This week, I want to take a short look at some dark times.

This week, I’d like to chat with you about alcohol abuse. Don’t turn the page or close the tab on me just yet. Hear me out. One of our stories this week is about the Community Alcohol Management Plan (CAMP) working group.

In the last edition of “Northern Gardening”, we discussed raspberries, both wild and cultivated. A number of currants, both red and black, and gooseberries are also produced from shrubs that grow in the surrounding area.

We can tackle climate change and create jobs. It is time for a Green New Deal for Canada. It starts with the clear recognition that we are faced with the prospect of catastrophic climate change.

Lately, I’ve heard a lot of fanfare about efforts to encourage business along Main Street. A revitalization committee for the area has been struck and some ideas from that committee have entered Flin Flon’s zeitgeist.

Flin Flon’s future could hinge on how we can connect with Indigenous people and communities. In order to do that, the community needs to help Indigenous people and entrepreneurs as much as possible. It seems like that’s starting to happen.

Many berry-producing shrubs also grow wild in the surrounding area. Picking wild berries can be a nice outing for the family, but growing the domesticated varieties has the advantages of larger size, easier picking and being close at hand.

Small fruit shrubs are primarily cherries and a wide variety of berries. Many are also ornamental, providing a show of lovely spring blooms. Growing a variety of these shrubs can provide you with fruit from the end of June into September.

To the Editor, If you have taken a walk down Main Street recently, you will see signs up in the windows of many businesses: “No public washroom,” “No loitering” or “The RCMP will be notified about intoxicated people.

Not that long ago, Flin Flon was listed as a possibility for a new cannabis retail outlet. When the provincial government listed several communities, we were on the list.
