Advance polling in the Flin Flon riding for the upcoming provincial election begins August 29, part of a Manitoba-wide initiative.

While the official provincial election day is Sept. 10, residents can vote in their home riding at any advance voting location, regardless of what riding or district within the province they currently live in.

Advance voting in Flin Flon will take place Aug. 29, Sept. 3 and Sept. 4 at the Flin Flon Community Hall between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Cranberry Portage will have the most opportunities for advance voting in the Flin Flon riding, with the town’s returning office open every day between Aug. 29 and Sept. 5. The returning office will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day besides Sept 1, when it will only be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Snow Lake residents will have only one day of advance voting at the Lawrie Marsh Community Hall Aug. 29.

New additions to the Flin Flon riding Cross Lake and Norway House will have two days of advance voting on Sept. 4 and 5, at the Cross Lake Community Hall and Norway House Multiplex respectively.

Other polling locations in the riding will only get one day of advance voting.

On Aug. 30, Lynn Lake, O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation and Leaf Rapids residents will have an opportunity to cast an early ballot. On Sept. 3, Mathias Colomb First Nation and Sherridon will have their early voting day. On Sept. 4, Tadoule Lake, Northlands Denesuline First Nation and Barren Lands First Nation will cap off early voting in the riding.

To vote in an advance poll, people on the voter’s list will require one piece of government identification with a photo or two without it. Any voters not on the voters list but with identification will need to take an oath. Voters with no identification will need to sign a voter registration card.

Advance voting has been on the rise, both in Manitoba and across Canada. In the 2011 provincial election, fewer than 80,000 people cast an early vote. In 2016, that number jumped to 109,000. Nearly one in every four ballots cast was at an advance polling location in 2016.
