Shirley Goodman passed away at Deer Lodge Centre on Saturday, January 10, 2015. She was 96.
She was predeceased by her husband James Erin Goodman, and by her grandson Andrew. She will be missed but celebrated by her children Bev, Pat, Tom and Gord; in-laws Bill, Chuck, Sonia and Marian; grandchildren Peter, Erin, Cliff, Liz and Eric; their spouses Kaylyn, Derek and Kyle; and great-grandchildren Ethan, Julie, Calvin, Kinley, Virginia and Matthew.
Shirley was the daughter of Ella (Somerville) and Rev. JBE Anderson. She was born in Rivers, Manitoba, and grew up as a “preacher’s kid” in rural Manitoba. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1942 and served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in England in WWII. Following that, she worked in Flin Flon where she met Jim. They raised their family there with some time in Copperhill, Tennessee, as well.
Throughout her long and happy married life, Shirley was very supportive of Jim’s musical undertakings. She loved music, but her talents lay elsewhere. She was a great cook and taught her kids in formal lessons. She was an expert knitter well into her 90’s. She volunteered. She read. As her family grew, she entertained grandchildren with creative crafts on rainy days at the lake. She delighted in visits from family, especially young ones. She could never get enough hugs.
Jim and Shirley retired to Winnipeg, but continued to summer at Beaver Lake, Sask. Following Jim’s death, Shirley lived at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence, then at Deer Lodge on a Veteran’s unit.
A memorial service will be held at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive on Friday, January 16 at 11 am.
The family would like to thank the staff of Deer Lodge Tower 4 who helped her be as independent as possible and the staff of Lodge 3 for their care at the end of her life.
