Peacefully with her sons at her side, Ruth Yeo passed away at the Personal Care Home in Dauphin, Man. on January 3, 2015. Ruth was born in Battleford, Sask. on December 18, 1919 to John and Eva Nelson of Prongua, Sask. Ruth grew up on the family farm, was the eldest of five children, and after high school attended Normal School in Saskatoon.
After a short teaching career in rural Saskatchewan, Ruth married Sydney Yeo on September 6, 1942, and they resided in Flin Flon for over 35 years. While in Flin Flon, Ruth and Sid raised two sons, Cameron and David. Ruth was active in the Eastern Star for many years in both Flin Flon and Dauphin, a long-time member of the ACW, a member of the hospital auxiliary, and a grade one teacher in the Flin Flon School Division. She was a faithful hospital visitor who would visit with anyone who needed company. She took great pride in her home and was an excellent homemaker. She enjoyed baking, square dancing, playing bridge, sewing, knitting, needlework as well as various other crafts. She enjoyed their summers camping in Northern Manitoba and after retirement, winters in Texas. Ruth took her responsibilities in life very seriously but enjoyed a good hearty laugh if it was in good taste and not at the expense of others.
After Sid’s retirement Ruth and Sid moved to Dauphin where she resided in Kinsmen Villa. She enjoyed new friendships, camping at Rainbow Beach, family get-togethers, her church, and the Eastern Star.
In November of 2009 Ruth could no longer continue on her own to battle Alzheimer’s disease and moved to the Dauphin Personal Care Home. Despite the debilitating effects of this illness, she never failed to express her appreciation to those who visited her and to those who cared for her. She was most appreciative of the time others spent with her or acting on her behalf.
Ruth leaves to mourn and cherish her memories sons Cameron (Linda) of Flin Flon and David (Margaret) of Dauphin, three grandchildren, Mark (Michelle), Donna (Jeff Madarash), Shelley (Doug Richards) and four great grandchildren in Flin Flon, three grandchildren Chris, Stephen (Ginny) and Allison (Ray Gauthier) and four great grandchildren in Dauphin, her sister-in-law Betty Nelson (Battleford, SK), sister-in-law Cauleen Yeo (Drayton Valley, Alta), sister-in-law Betty Nelson (Edmonton), sister-in-law Melvina Nelson (Calgary) and numerous nephews and nieces.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband Sid (1996), parents John and Eva Nelson, her brothers Stuart, Ken, Bruce and Alan.
The family wish to express their thanks and appreciation to the staff of the PCH for their loving care and concern for Ruth over the past five years. A special thank you to Sandi Bass of Companion Care for her special time spent with Ruth.
A funeral service for Ruth will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 23, 2015 at the Dauphin First Baptist Church with Pastor Loralyn Lind officiating. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, if so desired, a donation in Ruth’s memory to the Dauphin PCH or the Manitoba Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated.
