Another grim COVID-19 milestone has been passed for northern Manitoba. The region now has more active cases of COVID-19 than any other Manitoba health region, including Winnipeg.

For the first time in months, Manitoba has reported less than 100 new cases of COVID-19 in a day. The province reported 90 net new cases, including nine northern cases and a new case in the Flin Flon health district.

One new death, an increase in cases on both sides of the border and vaccines trickling their way into the north - there's a lot of new information on the COVID-19 front.

Manitoba's public health orders have been renewed for two more weeks with minimal changes.

Shots, shots, shots everybody - COVID-19 vaccines have officially made it to the north.

The Flin Flon health district is now down to one active COVID-19 case, but other northern communities are not nearly as lucky. The province announced 201 net new cases throughout Manitoba Jan. 7, 60 of which were located in northern Manitoba.

Good news on the local COVID-19 front. The COVID-19 outbreak at Northern Lights Manor is now considered over by provincial health officials and residents will soon get doses of a vaccine. No cases at the facility remain active as of Jan.

Don’t get too excited yet, but Manitoba’s COVID-19 numbers appear to be dropping. The province has had case numbers consistently in the 100s over the holiday and new year season, including 118 new cases reported Jan. 4.

Given the nature of Flin Flon and the many people from different backgrounds who came to the community, it is no surprise that so many cultural organizations were created in the town’s early years.
