This past Saturday, January 31, at the Uptown Curling Club, the annual playoffs were held for the square winners in both the Willow Park and Uptown ladies curling leagues. The event is now called the Candy Bar Cup, formerly the Kramer Cup and for many years the Royal Drugs Cup. There are many leagues in which to qualify thus teams such as Judy Maitland, who won the square in the ladies afternoon league, also won the square in the ladies evening league. The same can be said for the Sue Murray team who won the square in the Monday night league as well as the square in the Wednesday night league. As it turned out Robbie Lamonge's team won a square at Willow Park in the evening league and her team, due to previous commitments, couldn't curl in this event, so Robbie was asked to skip one of Maitland's teams. In Sue Murray's case, one of their teams was not able to curl due to previous commitments and Sue was unable to curl at all, so Jill Spiller skipped the team she normally plays on with Sue and they picked up a curler. Are you confused yet? Okay this is how the teams lined up: Patti Evans had Barb Groff, Cindy Rainville and Karen Kittle; Jill Spiller had Patty Korchinski, Denise Davis and Lorraine Poirier; Judy Maitland had Sherron Russell, Myrna Agerbak and Ann Hardy; Robbie Lamonge had Diane Pico, Karen Anderson and Darlene Quinn; Colleen Ford had Brenda MacGowan, Kerrilynn Behrman and Rhonda MacKinnon. This is how the draw was for the playoffs: At 9 a.m. Jill Spiller (Up) defeated Patti Evans (Up). At 11:30 a.m. Jill Spiller (Up) defeated Colleen Ford (Up) and Judy Maitland (WP) defeated Robbie Lamonge (WP). In the final game at 3 p.m. with Spiller playing Maitland, Judy Maitland won the event. In other curling news, the Bob Bensen team of Ryan Watt, Trevor Watt and Kelly Davis are off to Dauphin on Thursday to play in the Manitoba Tour Curling Playdowns. The Bensen team qualified by winning a floating spot in The Pas. The total purse for the Tour weekend is $25,000. Curling starts on Friday morning and the winner gets points to qualify for the Olympic Trials. The top 24 money winning teams are eligible to play in the Manitoba Tour of Champions in Dauphin. This may be a first for Flin Flon. Congratulations and best wishes to the Bensen rink. We will keep you up to date as the draws come in!
