The Norman Northstars U18 AAA squad finally earned a checkmark in the win column and their Flin Flon-born captain, Jordan Pfoh, played a big part.

The Northstars picked up their first win of the season Dec. 7, defeating the Kenora Thistles 6-1. They lost 6-5 to the Thistles the night before.

Pfoh, who played minor hockey in Flin Flon before joining the AAA squad based out of Thompson last season, had seven points (three goals and four assists) in the two-game set and was named the league’s player of the week for his efforts.

The Northstars have a record of 1-27-1 on the season, located at the bottom of the Manitoba U18 AAA standings. Kenora is second last in the league with only two wins on the season.

“Jordan’s been the most consistent Northstar that I’ve ever seen and that’s with all three of my kids playing,” said head coach Glenn Laycock during an interview with Shaw Thompson’s Northstars Show.

“He’s a great kid off the ice and a great student. He’s well deserved and he should get it.”

Pfoh started the season as a defenseman, but has shifted to forward for recent games. He is the second-leading scorer on the Northstars, only trailing forward Ryan Monias. He has 22 points in 28 games on the season, including eight goals and 14 assists. He still plays the point on the powerplay and scored from there during his player of the week performance.

“I played forward until peewee second year, then I switched back to defense,” he said on the Northstars Show.

“I feel a lot more comfortable at defense right now, because I’ve played it more often, but forward’s been a really nice switch so far. It’s been fun.”

Pfoh was happy to finally get the goose egg off the win column for the Northstars.

“It was great to get the first win - we loved it.”
