Make it another Pan-Am silver medal for Flin Flon wrestler Carson Lee.
The Flin Flon wrestler and University of Saskatchewan Huskies commit has earned another honour at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Junior Pan-American Championships, coming in second place in the 79-kilogram freestyle classification. Taking place in Guatemala City, Guatemala this year, Lee headed to the event having won two medals at the cadet level – a pair of silvers, won in 2017 and 2018.
Lee didn’t appear to have any jitters against older competition, opening up his bracket with a 10-0 win over Guatemala’s Jonathan Josue Lopez Vargas. That led Lee to the semi-final, where he faced Giovanni de Oliveira Gaion Piazza of Brazil and disposed of him handily, winning 10-0 once again.
That win led Lee directly to the gold medal match, where he would face Shane Griffith. A 19-year-old member of the Stanford Cardinal wrestling team originally from New Jersey, Griffith also headed into the final match without conceding a point.
Ultimately, Lee would take a point off Griffith, but would come up just short in the end, losing 12-1 in 3:24.
It’s the third straight silver for Lee at the Pan-Am level. The result will qualify Lee for the UWW Junior World Championships in August, taking place in Tallinn, Estonia.
