Carson Lee has done it again, winning his weight class at Saskatchewan wrestling provincials for the second straight year.

Lee was the only Hapnot wrestler who qualified for the tournament - members Kyle Gurniak and Maguire Lee did not place high enough at a regional tournament in February to earn a spot.

Entering the tournament at Campbell Collegiate in Regina, Lee was the number one seed in the 90-kilogram boys’ freestyle classification and had not conceded a single point in provincial competition all year. Out of an 11-athlete field, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies-commited world championship bronze medallist came out on top with ease.

In his first match, Lee beat McLurg High School wrestler Wyatt Huber with a 10-0 victory. Lee then beat Gage Storm from Marion M. Graham Collegiate, putting him in the championship bracket. In that round, Lee made quick work of Parker Gerow from St. Joseph High, then got to the final match against Tommy Douglas Collegiate’s Ekkapop Senyotkham. Lee stopped the Saskatoon-based Senyotkham with another 10-0 finish, giving Lee provincial gold after a tournament where he conceded only one point.

The win put the Hapnot team, which consisted solely of Lee, in second place in the 2A boys’ ranking with 10 points – only one behind Churchill Community High School from La Ronge, who brought five wrestlers to the tournament.

The tournament also came with some off-the-mat intrigue, as police were called to Campbell Collegiate March 8 after a report of students with weapons. Three teens at the school for the competition were arrested and face weapons charges after two hunting knives and a pellet gun were found. Police monitored the rest of the tournament.
