Hapnot’s junior varsity Kweens basketball team had a confident showing at this year’s provincial tournament, winning twice and coming one win short of consolation round glory.

Provincials for junior varsity A/AA teams took place at Carman Collegiate this year, a new locale for the Hapnot team. The junior Kweens, listed as the 10th seed in the tournament, opened their schedule against the Immanuel Christian Falcons. Hapnot won that game 37-30, advancing to the quarterfinals against the Ross L. Gray Raiders.

The Kweens had a rocky road against the province’s second-ranked team, losing 51-30 and going to the consolation bracket. Hapnot would face the ninth-seed MacGregor Mustangs for a spot in the consolation final, winning 35-32 to advance.

In the consolation final, Hapnot faced the Warren Wildcats, who had missed a spot in the semis by only five points. Warren took control of proceedings, beating Hapnot 53-35 in the consolation final.

Hapnot’s senior Kweens will head to their own provincial tournament at Sagkeeng Anicinabe Community School in Pine Falls from March 14-16. The Kweens have been seeded as the seventh-ranked team in the province going into the eight-team tournament and will start their provincial bid against the Goose Lake High Angels from Roblin.

Hapnot’s senior Kings will not head to provincials, but the Frontier Collegiate Raiders will – the Raiders, seeded number three, will play at Immanuel Christian School in Winnipeg from March 14-16 and will start their tournament March 14 against the Green Valley Pirates.
