Another award for Flin Flon wrestler Carson Lee? You bet.

Carson and brother Hunter were each nominated for honours at the Univ. of Saskatchewan as part of the school’s year-end Major 7 awards.

Carson won the award he was nominated for, the Howard Nixon Trophy, given to the school’s male rookie of the year in all athletic programs. Carson was one of four athletes up for the honour, including national silver medal winning long jumper Michael Akintunde, Canada West Rookie of the Year linebacker Ramsey Derbas and fellow Canada West Rookie of the Year hockey forward Jared Dmytriw.

Hunter was one of four nominees for the E. Kent Phillips Trophy for the Huskies’ male athlete of the year. Also nominated are Huskies goaltender Taran Kozun, who was named national collegiate goalie and player of the year, along with Canada West at USports Track Athlete of the Year and sprinter Karson Lehner and USports Defensive Player of the Year football defensive back Nelson Lokombo. Kozun would eventually win the award.

Each of the brothers had an impressive wrestling season with the Huskies. Hunter entered his third year with the Huskies program as the top-ranked 90-kilogram men’s collegiate wrestler in the country and did not let up, winning both the Canada West and national USports wrestling titles.

Not to be outdone, Carson did similar work in his first year of university wrestling. Ranked highly in his weight class before the start of the year despite never having stepped on a university mat, Carson went on to improve on already lofty expectations by winning a Canada West title and, later, a national title in the 82-kilogram weight class.
