A handful of Flin Flon bantam players participated in the 2019 Director’s Cup Prospects tournament in Winnipeg recently. The provincial hockey development tournament was open to Manitoba’s top 2005-born players, or players in their first year of Bantam hockey.

Along with players from The Pas and Thompson, the group took part in a three-day tournament from May 3-5. The rosters for the tournament were initially named in February following a late-January tryout in Snow Lake.

In total, nine people from Flin Flon and nearby communities joined the 17-member northern Manitoba delegation to the program, including Flin Flonners Tye Burke, Chris Francoeur, Joey Lies, Logan Salamondra and Tanner Werbicki; Jacob Kuzmiak and Ethan McLean from Creighton and Embry Roberts from Pelican Narrows. Flin Flonner Greg Kritzer also participated as a coach.

The players were mixed into 12 different teams involving players from across the province, consisting of more than 200 total goalies and skaters. Lies led the way for Flin Flon players, scoring three points in four games, while Roberts added a goal and an assist. Burke, Werbicki, Slugoski and Kuzmiak each tallied one point apiece.

Salamondra, a goaltender, suited up for four games, giving up six goals in a three-win-one-loss effort.

Roblin’s Brayden Dube led the way for all players, tallying eight goals and 13 points in four games.
