Over $11,000 along with many other prizes were awarded this year at the Cranberry Portage Trout Challenge, held August 1 and 2. Flin Flon and Cranberry Portage teams fared very well in taking home cash prizes with $3,500 awarded to the top placing team of Randy Whitbread and Gerald Robertson (Flin Flon) for catching 235.5 inches; $2,500 to Randy Boychuk and Blaine Hyska (Flin Flon) for catching 221 inches; and $2,000 to John Waterer and Bruce Murray (Winnipeg) for 220.5 inches. Other cash prizes were presented to Bill Connely and Paul Skoczylaz (Estevan) for 215.5 inches; Ted and Leslie Smith (Cranberry Portage) for 214.5 inches; Ray Lavis and Gary Kozar (Flin Flon) for 213.5 inches; Barry Anderson and Gord Fidierchuk (Cranberry Portage) for 212.5 inches; David Minish and Jim Reich (Swan River) for 210 inches; Martin Ouellet and Rob James (Cranberry Portage) for 209.5 inches; and Sheldon Wiebe and Joby Nomeland (Flin Flon) for 209.5 inches. A free entry to the 2010 Trout Challenge, valued at $150, was won by Onni Hyytiainen and Jerry Kozlowski (The Pas). Two 35.5-inch trout were caught Saturday Ð one by Will McKenzie (Cranberry Portage) and another by Dale Kerwin (The Pas), so the $100 prize for largest fish of the day was shared. Gerald Robertson and Barney Anderson each caught a 38.5-inch trout on Sunday, so the prize was again shared. The two had to play rock, paper, scissors to see who would take home the Team Manitoba Master Angler jacket from Manitoba Tourism for catching the largest fish of the tournament, and Robertson's paper beat Anderson's rock! The Candace Danielson Memorial Trophy was awarded to Myrna Watkins (Souris) for landing a 29-inch fish, the largest trout caught by a female. This trophy was donated by Candace's family, and Watkins also received a plaque, jacket and a 2010 Trout Challenge Team Entry valued at $150. The Sixth Annual John Moodie Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the highest placing Cranberry Portage team and until next year, the bragging rights that go along with that belong to Ted and Leslie James. The two day, one night fly-out fishing trip for six valued at $3,000 was won by Bryan Lundie. The 50/50 draws held to support the Cranberry Portage Heritage Museum were won by Kenny Johnston (Saturday) and Ryan Freeze (Sunday). We hope to see all anglers return for the 21st Annual Trout Challenge in 2010!
