Experienced Marchi takes on bigger role with Bombers

Each season that Daylan Marchi has worn a Flin Flon Bombers jersey, his point production and responsibilities have grown.

“When I joined the Bombers as an 18-year-old, my role was to mainly keep things simple, get the puck deep, bang bodies, and try to not get scored on,” said Marchi, recalling when joined the team in 2017 via a trade.

“As a 20-year-old veteran, the compete level and buying in to playing the right way is still implied and preached, but I would say more pressure is on my shoulders, along with our other top players, being expectations are higher being more experienced, skilled and stronger than when I was younger because it’s our veterans that are going to lead the way.”

Marchi has gone from a two-goal, eight-point season as a 17-year-old with the AJHL’s Canmore Eagles to this season already posting career highs with 18 goals and 45 points. As players get older, you hope they grow and develop and Marchi has definitely done that. Flin Flon head coach Mike Reagan said that Marchi has rounded out his game to be someone who can provide the team with scoring.

“I’m really happy with where he has come from,” the Bombers bench boss said. “Hopefully, he can continue to develop as a player and become even more of an asset for us.”

Marchi is third on the team in scoring this season. He has scored in three of his last four games. When asked what has allowed him to put up points this season, Marchi said:

“Working as a line with my teammates and buying into the system preached to us by our staff. Without my teammates, I don’t see myself having the success that I have had.”

However, Marchi’s game is about far more than just numbers. Reagan said the Bombers try to have as many players as possible be 200-foot players and that Marchi has done a good job of doing that.

As well, he emphasized that Marchi “can play a gritty game and be physical and go to the dirty areas.” Reagan said that not all players are willing to go to those areas consistently. “I think he should take a lot of pride that he has that capability,” Reagan said.

Marchi’s grittiness, confidence, and four years of junior A experience also make him a leader for the Bombers. Partway through last season he was named an assistant captain. He has worn a letter all this season.

Marchi has had an interesting hockey journey. He grew up partly in Sparwood, BC and then moved to Lethbridge to be able to play on a higher-level team. Junior hockey has taken him to Canmore and Flin Flon and he hopes it gives him an opportunity to play while getting an education next season.

Marchi is very pleased that hockey brought him to Flin Flon. A highlight of his time here has been his relationship with his billet family - Leanna Campbell, Clint, Caleb and Hannah. This is his second season living with them.

“When I first met them, it just felt like that’s where I belonged and no words can describe how great they are,” Marchi said. “They treat me like I’m their own son or, for the kids, a big brother. They have helped me so much from good day to days where I needed help through adversity. I’m so thankful to have them welcome me into their home and over the years I have became so close with the family that they will always be apart of my life even after my time with the Bombers is done!”

When asked what he has enjoyed most about playing for the Bombers, Marchi said there was not one answer he would use.

“Ever since I first stepped foot into the Whitney, I knew Flin Flon was going to be my second home and I was excited about the challenge that was ahead of me – from coaches, teammates, billets, the community all the way to a playoff-packed Whitney Forum where you will never feel an adrenaline rush like that except only in the Zoo. You are treated so well and the Bombers not only teach you how to improve on the ice but also off and skill to help you later on in life.”
