The Flin Flon Bombers came out of one of their toughest tests of the season with a 3-1 loss.

It was Flin Flon’s first matchup against the Battlefords North Stars this season, the same club that beat the Bombers in the Canalta Cup finals two seasons ago.

After being evenly matched through the first half of the game, the Bombers drew first blood, courtesy of Calvon Boots’ fifth goal of the season. Despite scoring first, the Stars caught up quickly, with goals from Jacob Bayne and Cody Spagrud, giving the Battlefords squad a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The third period included more close play, but ultimately no more scoring. The Bombers mustered nine more shots, but Stars netminder Joel Grzybowski held down the fort, sealing a Battlefords win. Matthias Urbanski added a late empty net goal.

Bomber goalie Pierce Diamond had one of his busiest nights yet in the Flin Flon net, making 41 saves. Grzybowski had a much quieter night in comparison, stopping 30 shots.

The loss bumps the Bombers down to third spot in the ultra-competitive Sherwood Division. Melfort and Nipawin sit tied for the division lead with 31 points apiece, while the Bombers linger back with 30. The Bombers have played fewer games than either of the two competing teams, playing 21 matches so far compared to Nipawin’s 24 and Melfort’s 22.

In their past 10 games, the Bombers have gone 9-1 and are the first SJHL team to hit 100 goals scored this season.

The Bombers will try to avenge Friday’s loss with a rematch against the Stars on Saturday night.
