GIMLI — A search that began when an empty boat was found on Lake Winnipeg has ended tragically.

RCMP say they were contacted Sunday morning that an abandoned boat was found in open water near Willow Island, south of Gimli.

Upon arrival, local Coast Guard authorities told officers that a wallet and cellphone were located on the boat, but there were no occupants.

RCMP say they deployed their Marine Unit and Underwater Recovery Unit, and a few hours later searchers located a 62-year-old man in the water dead.

Police say he was the sole occupant of the boat.

They say they are still investigating.
