Hudbay Flin Flon’s mine rescue team is officially tops in the province, winning a provincial competition on their home turf. The local mine rescue squad beat three other mine rescue teams from Bernic Lake, Snow Lake and Thompson in the Manitoba Provincial Mine Rescue Competition, held May 24-25 at 777 mine. The Flin Flon team, consisting of captain Mike Desjarlais, second Jarrod Ritch, third Mike Bassham, fourth Rob Johnson, vice-captain David Green, director of operations Phil Cardell, technician Kelly Willetts and coach Tracy Knutson, finished as overall champions and finished first in the first aid and firefighting competitions. Second prize overall went to the Hudbay Snow Lake team, captained by Aldon Kowalchuk and consisting of second Tyler Irving, third Jordan Riley, fourth Travis Fedak, vice-captain and technician Bernard Fourie, director of operations Jon Young and coached by Terry Hornyak. A number of Hudbay Flin Flon members were also part of winning teams in a series of practical skills challenges, made of squad members from different locations. Flin Flon captain Desjarlais captained the Red Team, which ended as overall champion in the practical skills tests. In the Jaws of Life Jenga event, both Ritch and Willetts were part of the winning Blue Team, using a Jaws of Life unit from the Creighton Volunteer Fire Department.
