Shortly after 7 pm on Friday April 29, several men went through the ice on Snow Lake – purposefully! Training for ice rescue, members of the Snow Lake Volunteer Fire Department donned special survival gear and practiced their skills under a controlled environment at the local lake.
“It’s just something I like to do this time of year with the guys,” Fire Chief Cory Anaka said of the training. “Hone those ice-rescue skills and introduce the new members to the icy waters of Snow Lake.”
The chief says with the sledding season ending and warmer weather finally here, more people are heading out onto rotten ice with their quads and side-by-sides. “We really don’t want to think of someone going through the ice, but it’s something we have to anticipate and be ready for,” he noted. “In fact, just after we got out there, one of the members mentioned that there were some kids from town that had broken through the ice with a quad. We always expect it to be kids that this happens to, but it can happen to anyone. I hope people are using their heads and staying off the ice at this time of the year. I would like to keep this just a practice.”
