Dear Editor: Re:Ê Article on Sipple Hill in the July 25th edition of The Reminder. To me, it has always been known as Sipple Hill. I was a kid in theÊlate '30s and there were two hills that challenged us on our single speed bikes. Both started at the bottom of Third Avenue by the old telephone office, and obviously ended at the top of each hill. Standing at the bottom and looking up Third Avenue Hill,Ê Sipple Hill was on our left. In those days Third Avenue had a hump in the middle. Cliff Campbell (he had one leg) had a confectionary at the bottom of Third Avenue Hill, a tiny shack about 8 ft. by 10 ft.Ê This a fact because I lived at the bottom of Sipple Hill where the booster pump house is now. We never referred to the hill as Ross Street, it was always referred to as Sipple Hill. At that time there was no Foster Park, just a water hole swamp full of frogs. In those days it was some feat to be able to bike up eitherÊSipple Hill or Third Avenue Hill. Lived there, been there, and finally made it up both hills on my bike. Ê - Oldtimer
