Dear Editor, The Recycling Centre has completed another year. 243 tonnes of materials were diverted from local landfills. By creating new materials from these recyclables, less energy was required and there was less consumption of our natural resources. Each year it is a struggle for the Recycling Centre to remain in the black, as it operates on a very tight budget. The prices for the sale of recyclables fluctuate throughout the year. In fact, the sale of recyclables was only six per cent of our income for 2010. Other sources of revenue for the Centre include the stewardship program (Enviro levies), fees for pick up services including red bags, rental income and net revenue from providing gate services at the Flin Flon landfill. The biggest percentage of our income comes from the City of Flin Flon and Town of Creighton. These municipalities pay a "per-capita fee" of just under $10 per resident in their community. These funds are used to support the processing and shipping of materials at the Centre. The Recycling Centre is aware that many in our outlying areas recycle and support the Centre's efforts, but do not reside in either Creighton or Flin Flon. There is still a cost associated with processing and shipping recyclable materials, regardless of where the materials come from. The Recycling Centre is asking those in the outlying areas who are supporting it by recycling, to also consider supporting it financially. A contribution of $10 a person per household outside of Creighton and Flin Flon, will go towards to the costs of processing their recyclables, and help ensure that the recycling program continues for the whole Community including outlying areas. Please continue to recycle, and consider the costs involved to process your materials. Your monetary contribution would help alleviate the financial burden the Centre experiences in providing recycling services in our area. Payments can be made at the Centre weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or mailed to Box 392, Flin Flon, MB. R8A 1N1. Deb Odegaard Chairperson Flin Flon and District Environment Council, Inc.
