Here are a few random thoughts on random things in our communities... * * * Whenever you're around something for a long period of time, you begin to take it just a little bit for granted. Case in point, our own artistic talent. Those stopping by the Flin Flon Arts Council's art exhibit last weekend were treated to a feast for the eyes. A number of pieces looked as though they belonged in a big city art gallery. (And who knows? Some may find their way there). The creativity and skill showcased at the R.H. Channing Auditorium was tremendous. I'm not a huge art buff, but I found myself captivated. It's hard to pick favourites, but mine would have to be "Lady Snake" (pictured), a vivid acrylic painting by Helene Larson. Unfortunately, my photo just doesn't do the piece justice. Hats off to all the artists who put their work out for us to enjoy. * * * It's amazing how much packed snow gradually builds up on our roads. The other day, I saw a section of street that had been dug to the pavement. The layer of white stuff must have been as tall as a soda can. * * * The Neighbours of the North flower display has really added to the uptown scenery. I don't think I've driven by a single time these past several months without taking a glance. * * * When I was younger, I used to wonder why people would want to live in Denare Beach given all the driving back and forth to Flin Flon. I was again reminded over the weekend just what a special little community "The Beach" is. What great community spirit on display for the 28th Annual Denare Beach Winter Festival. * * * With the Northern Saskatchewan election saga finally behind us, let's hope there aren't too many hard feelings between supporters of former MP Jeremy Harrison and his successor, Gary Merasty. Jeremy is a no-nonsense kind of guy, someone who, agree or disagree, made his positions clear. He loved the job, and it must have been difficult for him to lose by such a razor thin margin (67 out of more than 24,000 cast). I must say that I've heard a lot of kind words about Gary, particularly from locals who know the one-time Flin Flonner. It's nice for a riding with such a significant native population to have an aboriginal leader like Gary in Parliament. * * * Make sure you slow down to take the turn by the Gas Bar. This winter, I've seen a couple of instances where drivers put a little too much faith in their traction only to see their back ends slide out. Thankfully, neither resulted in an accident. * * * I've really been enjoying our newest column, "Police Interrogation," appearing Mondays. It's been a good opportunity to introduce our Mounties to the community as people, not just enforcers of the law. Local Angle runs Fridays.6/3/06
