My Take on Snow Lake: Tourney, memorial among town happenings

There are three items that I would like to touch on in this column. The first is news around Snow Lake that the local Minor Hockey Association will host a Squirts tournament on Feb. 28 that will see eight teams take part.

There are three items that I would like to touch on in this column.

The first is news around Snow Lake that the local Minor Hockey Association will host a Squirts tournament on Feb. 28 that will see eight teams take part.

The old WT Lipton Arena hasn’t seen that type of action in many years!

Secondly, the Snow Lake Mining Museum will begin working with the Snow Lake Motor Inn, Steelworkers Local 7106 and Hemauer Funeral Home on a project that will honour all the workers who have lost their lives in the mines of the Snow Lake area.

Word has it that the memorial will become a permanent installation.

Finally, a provincial government rep has advised that there has been some movement on the issue of future monitoring of lake levels and adjustments at the Snow Creek Control Structure.

A worker from northern MLA Steve Ashton’s office advised that the province will commit more staff to ensure a timely response in the future (to lake levels that erode the shoreline).

When asked about improvements to the structure – to bring it into the 21st century – the rep was unsure of long-term plans and was also unclear on just how the staff would ensure a more timely response (having a dedicated staff person right in Snow Lake?).

Nevertheless, he did say he would check into both questions and call back with answers.

My Take on Snow Lake runs Fridays.
