My Take on Snow Lake: Squirts tournament packs Wilfred T. Lipton arena

“The place was packed to the rafters” is how the coach of the Snow Lake Squirt Spartans, Colleen Cairns, summed up attendance at a hockey tournament held on Saturday, February 28.

“The place was packed to the rafters” is how the coach of the Snow Lake Squirt Spartans, Colleen Cairns, summed up attendance at a hockey tournament held on Saturday, February 28.

There were 121 kids from eight teams suited up and taking part in the event, and close to 200 people who watched from the stands.

Three teams from Thompson, two from The Pas and single teams from OCN, Flin Flon and Snow Lake took part in the competition.

Randy Compton, recreation supervisor for the Town of Snow Lake, said it had been quite some time since the stands at the Wilfred T. Lipton Arena were as full as they were for the tournament.

Compton added that it was great for the kids and good for the town.

Ruth Tetlock, a grandmother of one of the players from Flin Flon, spoke on how much they enjoyed their day in Snow Lake.

“It was a very well organized tournament and I know everyone really enjoyed themselves,” said Tetlock. “It was also a very busy day… I feel like I played two games of hockey myself!”

Ms. Tetlock also said how impressed and thankful many of the parents were that movies were played at the hall for the children during their off-ice time.

After announcing the stars of the final game between (the winning team from) Flin Flon and Snow Lake and the awarding of medals, parent / organizer Jodi Bartlett advised the tournament was a great success and that there is already some interest in planning another for next season.

My Take on Snow Lake runs Fridays.
