Family and friends of Helen Vinkle gathered in the Snow Lake Legion following an afternoon meat draw on Saturday, May 30.
The get-together had a dual purpose: to wish the Vinkle matriarch a happy 84th birthday and honour her with a life membership for her 50 years as a Legion Ladies Auxiliary Member.
With tears of joy running down her cheeks, Vinkle cut her birthday cake and daughters Shelly and Brenda Forsyth-Flamand helped her pass it out.
Legion Auxiliary President Fran Saskowski had some kind words for Helen as she awarded her with the life membership.
Later, Vinkle noted that all her years as a member were not spent in Snow Lake. She was a member in Ontario for 10 years prior to moving to Snow Lake.
She said that she enjoyed every minute that she spent within the Auxiliary, and joked that they politely asked her to step down from the Colour Party because the flags became a bit unwieldy and she kept smashing lights.
In other news, a ribbon-cutting and tour of Snow Lake’s new Lakefront Suite Complex (Golden Vista Building) will take place on June 27 from 2 to 4 pm.
A number of local folks and those from far away will be interested in seeing what this beauty has to offer.
My Take on Snow Lake runs Fridays.
