There was some big money up for grabs in the Snow Lake Curling Club’s Fifth Annual Mixed Bonspiel.
And as is normally the case, there was a lot of fun and great curling that went along with the event!
Participation was up from last year, when only six teams took part. This year eight rinks vied for the cash prize and bragging rights.
Games took place at evenly dispersed intervals throughout the two-day event and the final was a bit of a barnburner. It pitted the Schellenberg foursome of skip Ross Schellenberg, third Brad Gogal, second Jackie Schollie and lead Maureen Macleod against the Peterson rink of skip Kelly Peterson, third Judy Peterson, second Tony Butt, and lead Toni Butt.
It began looking like a bit of a blowout with Schellenberg stealing in the first three ends to take a commanding 6 -0 lead in the eight-end final. To their credit, the Peterson bunch cracked a four-ender in the fourth.
Things went back and forth from there, with Peterson ending up one down coming home, looking to steal and tie the game.
It was not to be and the Schellenberg foursome was declared the winner. They headed upstairs to mop their brows, quench their thirst and collect their $1,000 prize money.
Second place went to the Peterson rink and they received $500 for their efforts. Third place and $300 went to the Wiwcharuk-Roy rink, and the fourth-place team was the Kowalchuk rink, who were awarded $200.
Presenting the prize money and hardware were the major sponsors of the bonspiel, Northland Ford’s Doug Gourlay and Koop Geotechnical’s Dave Koop.
They presented cash to the winners and expressed their appreciation for the fine curling and good times that took place over the weekend.
