A meeting on emergency response was held in the Snow Lake Health Centre boardroom last month.
Those present were the centre’s Dr. Neil Macleod and nurse manager Kelly Wiwcharuk; the town’s Mayor Kim Stephen and chief administrative officer Jordan Willner; EMS’s Velma Yates and Gary Davis; Hudbay’s health and safety representative Kevin Leif; the Ranger/Manitoba Ground Search and Rescue’s Garnet Coulson; the RCMP’s Cpl. Eric Descoteaux and constables Robert Koprowski and Justin Huddle; and the Snow Lake Snowmobile Club’s Chris Chell.
The meeting centered on Snow Lake’s emergency response and was called to order by Dr. Macleod.
Macleod thanked the individuals for representing their respective organizations and for coming to talk about how to respond to an emergency in Snow Lake.
He identified the change in representatives and thought it would be a good idea for everyone to get to know each other, as all parties in attendance would be called on if an emergency were to occur.
A recap of previous emergency responses in Snow Lake was discussed, as was how to coordinate a response to remote areas within the municipality. Maps and local knowledge supplemented much of the conversation.
It was agreed that communication between all parties has a major influence over the success or failure in an emergency response. Resources and communication methods were identified and shared.
My Take on Snow Lake is published on Fridays.
