They rolled out the barrel at Snow Lake's Legion several weekends back, Good times rolled along with it, and laughter resonated throughout the building and along Snow Lake's spacious Main Street. This is the case most times when the Legion Ladies Auxiliary gets together, but particularly when they have others visit from out-of-town. Add a theme for the given event and the costumes, shenanigans, and mirth seems endless. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't all play, these gals didn't get together just for fun. There was some hardware on the line as well. It so happened that Snow Lake's Legion Ladies Auxiliary Branch No. 241 were hosts to #1 North District Sports Weekend held Oct. 4-6 with the theme being Oktoberfest. 'Forty-three members attended; all in costume,' said participating auxiliary member Lois Charron. 'There were 11 from The Pas, 10 from Flin Flon, two from Gilliam, and two from Thompson. Churchill was busy with polar bear season.' Snow Lake's contingent comprised 18 members and the games the good-natured group of pseudo Fr_uleins played were Cribbage, Pool, Darts, Shuffleboard and the time honoured traditional sport of beer pong. 'Helen Vinkle was crowned Oktoberfest Queen,' said Charron 'A great time was had by allÉ and it was sure nice to see old friends and a great chance to meet new ones.' On to another matter, it seems in tiny Snow Lake, there is no end to the generosity in giving, nor in the openness of the town's collective heart. For the second time in three months, residents have drawn together to help those in need. Several socially responsible Snow Lake residents saw that there were a number of people in the community dealing with serious medical issues. They thought about it; got together, and came up with a proven formula in helping those who experience the inevitable fiscal problems that arise while facing a medical crisis. Three months back a community fundraiser was held to help Dari Miller, a young mother of two who was fighting cancer. She sadly lost her courageous battle, but not before experiencing the loving, helpful and generous nature of many in her hometown. Using this already established format, another such community fundraiser was held on in the Snow Lake Elks Hall on the evening of Oct. 9. 'The money being raised by this fundraiser is going into an account to help people in town who currently have medical issues,' said Jill Arpin, spokesperson for the organizers. Arpin said the event, which boasted a bake table, penny parade, cakewalk and canteen, was very successful. 'We hosted a bake sale, which had six tables full of donated baking,' said Arpin. 'The baking sold very quickly; half was gone by 4:30 p.m.' She said the penny parade was also very popular, with close to 50 prizes involved. 'The donations for the penny parade were super generous; from a fire pit to a surround sound speaker, and so much more,' Arpin noted. 'We also had a 50/50 draw, which took in $1,210, so the lucky winner received $605, which was very generously donated back to us!' Additionally, the organizing group held a raffle that featured everything needed to make a traditional thanksgiving meal _ turkey, all the fixings, epicure and pampered chef cooking utensils, and lots more! As well, the children's cake walk was popular with children young and old and featured numerous amazingly decorated and donated cakes. The canteen featured pizza donated by Angilinas, Hazel Kitzler's famous perogies, hamburgers, hot dogs, chili and homemade buns. 'An estimated 300 people came out to support the event and we managed to raise a total of $6300,' said Arpin.
