I have a couple of items for this weeks offering, both of which fall under the heading of "sports related." Firstly, several weeks back, students from J.H. Kerr School travelled to Norway House in order to compete in the Divisional Frontier Games. In competition against athletes from across the five areas and 42 schools of the massive division, the Snow Lake contingent did exceptionally well. In girls' archery, Kelsey Morrell placed first and brought home a Divisional Banner with the win. Additionally, Heaven Bignell placed seventh overall in the event. In boys' cross-country skiing, Josh Hughes garnered second place, but ran his last race after losing a toenail through a mishap with a shower door. Josh showed a true hockey player's spirit, sucking it up, donning his skis, and finishing what he started. As a result, he was the recipient of the boys' Most Sportsmanlike Award. In boys' doubles badminton, Kade Korchinski and Brady Kowalchuk were awarded third place. In girls' doubles snowshoeing, Mercedes Longpre and Heaven Bignell also took third place, and in girls' table tennis, Taelor Kowalchuk held sixth place. The coaches of these events were Dean Elliott (trap-setting and snowshoeing), Steve Deighton (cross-country skiing), Twila Korchinski (team sports) and Robin Coulson (table tennis and badminton). Curling event The second item deals with the Snow Lake Curling Club's First Annual Mixed Cash Spiel, which was held the weekend of March 11-13. From all indications it was well-organized, well-run, well-attended and much enjoyed! In addition to the curling, the bonspiel featured a refreshment breakfast on the Saturday morning, a chicken, chili, and pizza supper that evening, and a 'Putt to the Button' contest that was professed to be every bit as hard as it looked. However, it also appeared to be a lot of fun. Jen Volk was the winner of the $200 prize money in the event. She actually placed one of her three golf balls right on the button! Saturday evening wound down with a dance and socializing in the clubroom and with much of the fun out of the way, the serious curling took place on Sunday. There was $2,680 up for grabs and the winners of the A, B, and C events took home $600, $400, and $300 respectively. In the A Event, it was the Don Playford team taking home both the honour of first place and the cash. He was accompanied by third Bob Meeks, second Darren Henry and lead Sherry Playford. For the B Event, the Bob Forsyth foursome of third Dori Forsyth, second Colleen Cairns, and lead Shelly Chrapun were triumphant. And in the C Event, Doc Macleod's team of third Leone Jackson, second Brian Doak, and lead Maureen Macleod was victorious. In handing out the cash prizes, emcee, Kelly Peterson said the club hoped to make the spiel an annual event! My Take on Snow Lake runs Fridays.
