The local Manitoba Métis Federation held their Father’s Day Fish Derby on June 21 and as in past years, it was very successful, not just in attendance, but in fish that were caught.
The annual tournament saw its entries dip from last year’s 165, with only 104 this year, but there was once again a healthy number of fish caught and released.
The tournament is hidden length in nature, so its winners are based on the luck of the draw. How the derby works is entrants catch their fish, photograph it with a receipt given out at registration. They then enter their fish and the time of entry is noted.
When the lengths are drawn, the person who has caught the fish closest to that length wins, and in the event of a tie, the fish caught at the earlier time wins.
The winners in the 2015 derby were: first prize of $1,200 - Josh Violette; second prize of $500 - Gunnar Christianson; third prize of $200 - Jonathon Young; and fourth prize of $100 - Michael Young. Several other major draws took place during the event, but the names were not available at press time.
Out of the 104 entries, several did not catch a fish. Their names were all placed together, one was drawn, and a consolation prize of $50 was awarded to Jeri Spence.
Once again, it was great to see some young folks take prizes in this event… and always nice to see them out and involved.
