During the weekend of Dec. 19 and 20, 2014, the Norman Scotties Regional Playdown was held at the Gordon M. Rupp Rink in Snow Lake.
A total of two teams entered in the zone, both from Snow Lake. They were the Peterson rink, consisting of Skip Judy Peterson, third Suzanne Kluke, second Lori Forbes and lead Janis Fjermestad; and the Wiwcharuk team of skip Kelly Wiwcharuk, third Jenna Wiwcharuk-Roy, second Janelle Grant and lead Toni Butt.
The format of play was a double knockout, meaning in order to win a team needed to beat their opponent twice.
The first game was on Friday (Dec. 19) at 8 pm, and ended with the Wiwcharuk team winning in the extra end.
The second game took place Saturday morning, (Dec. 20) at 10 am, and with Wiwcharuk up by two, with last rock in the 10th end, they ran the Peterson team out of rocks for the win.
The zone win means the Wiwcharuk rink takes a trip to Winkler, Manitoba, to curl in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Championship on January 21-25, 2015.
Of note, the Olympic champion Jennifer Jones rink is also one of the 16 teams that qualified this year and will take part in the Scotties.
Committee formed
In other news, Frontier School Division area superintendent Cathy Fidierchuk recently advised that a school committee has been formed for J.H. Kerr School.
The committee was formed by interested people who put their names forward and were appointed by the members from the last committee, as per provincial rules.
The composition of the new committee is as follows: Kayla Ryan, chair (Ryan was the only one of the group who stood for election); Erica Erickson (vice-chair); Madonna O’Keefe, treasurer; Teri Olafson (secretary); and Don Gowan, committee member and area representative.
Fidierchuk further advised that the school committee has met monthly since being formed in October 2014.
“They are taking their mandate seriously and working very positively as a group and in cooperation with the school,” said the superintendent. “They have become familiar with their role and responsibilities through having regular training at the committee table provided by the governance support officer, Kelly Jacobson.”
