News was received during the latter part of December advising that the community of Herb Lake Landing commissioned their community mural. The mural will be themed along a transportation timeline, depicting the area and modes of transportation used from Wekusko Siding to the former community of Herb Lake.
The 24-foot by eight-foot fresco by The Pas’ Mike O’Toole will be placed in the parking area across from the Landing’s Gathering Place.
Its subject matter will tell a story of travel. It will start from Wekusko Siding train station in the 1900s, showing a steam engine, then a horse and buggy coming across a corduroy road into the Herb Lake Landing and a dock by the water, then on to Herb Town by way of George Cann’s Steamboat. It is hoped the mural will be finished by spring 2015 and ready for installation prior to the community’s Pioneer Days Celebration on the August Long Weekend.
In other news, former Snow Laker Chad Vinkle has recorded a single in honour of deceased Snow Lake pilot Mark Gogal.
He has forwarded a number of them on to Gerard Lamontagne for sale at the Snow Lake Motor Inn. Proceeds from sale of the single will go to Mark’s children.
Finally, after 28 years of looking after other people’s money, Lillian Haines has put down the pen and will spend a little of her own in retirement.
A good number of Snow Lakers were in and out of the local RBC Branch during the day on Friday Dec. 5, not only to do some of that pre-Christmas banking, but to wish this longstanding bank employee all the best in her retirement.
Lillian and husband Jim plan to take a year to putter around preparing their property out at Berry Bay for sale, then go out in search of warmer climates.
