During the afternoon of July 1 – Canada Day – family and friends of the late Elaine Moshenko McAuley gathered in the area under the Manitoba Maples on the grounds of the Snow Lake Health Centre.
There, they placed and dedicated a bench in Elaine’s memory. The bench is adorned with a plaque that reads “Dedicated in loving memory of Elaine Moshenko McAuley,” and is situated in the spot where Elaine spent the last months of her all-too-short life, chatting and laughing.
Both the day and the hearts of those in attendance were bright, sunny and warm.
In other news, Snow Lakers were all settled in to watch another spectacular display of fireworks on Canada Day; however, there seemed to be somewhat of a delay.
As folks pondered what the problem could be, sirens began to wail and firefighters who were up till now engaged in preparing their annual display were forced to drop what they were doing and respond to a 911 call citing a fire on McGilvray Ave.
Fire Chief Cory Anaka advised that the alarm was the result of backyard fire pit that was left unattended and it sparked and started a neighbour’s fence and snowblower on fire.
“Ten guys out of the 14 who were in attendance that night went to the fire,” said Anaka of his department’s response. “Four guys had to stand guard at the beach and a couple, who had to work the next day, came from home.”
Anaka noted that due to the proximity of the blaze, response time was good and that firefighters were on the scene within minutes.
Mop up work was minimal, Anaka said.
“After the fire was extinguished, the guys came back to the beach to help with the show,” he said.
Snow Lake EMTs also received the 911 call and attended the scene.
