My priority now that Parliament is back in session is clear: to raise northern issues.
Over the past few months I have visited throughout our region. I have talked to hundreds, if not thousands of constituents. I have listened to many concerns.
On the first day back in Parliament I raised an issue of concern to many people in our riding. The need to call a national inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women. I pointed out that this is a critical part of the need for action
on this crisis.
The tragic death of Tina Fontaine is another reminder of what we are dealing with. This is a crisis that has touched virtually every community in our region.
The initiative by so many family members to drag the Red River to find the bodies of their loved ones is a stark reminder of the despair many people feel when they lose a family member.
The social media campaign shared by many women, featuring the slogan “am I next?” speaks to the fear and anxiety that many women feel because of this.
I will continue to speak out on this issue until we get action from the federal government.
I will continue to work hard to ensure our voice is heard in Ottawa.
