It was my pleasure, recently, to announce that 120 First Nations youths in Saskatchewan will receive personalized job readiness supports through our Government’s Economic Action Plan.
Across the country, First Nations youth from 70 communities are currently participating, and succeeding in, job readiness activities. This includes 28 First Nations communities right here in Saskatchewan with the number soon to rise to 41 participating Saskatchewan First Nations.
These job readiness supports are giving First Nations youth the tools and opportunities necessary to succeed in today’s workforce.
On-reserve First Nations members between the ages of 18 and 24 are receiving personalized job and skills training as part of changes to the Income Assistance Program, with those involved given their choice of a variety of services and programs tailored to their strengths and preferences.
“The Government of Canada firmly believes that First Nations should have the same opportunities as all Canadians to find, keep and enjoy the benefits of a good job – that’s why this program is so important,” said Bernard Valcourt, Canada’s Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. “It provides personalized jobs readiness support for youth… so they can successfully take advantage of the economic prosperity of this country.”
Our government’s Enhanced Service Delivery initiative is working to remove barriers faced by Aboriginal youth in their pursuit of meaningful employment.
We are paving the way for more prosperous and independent First Nations communities by creating an environment for success for First Nations youth.
