We all know that healthy eating is important.
Our government is working hard to ensure that Canadians have the information necessary to make the right food choices for ourselves and our children.
We are proposing changes to nutrition labelling on products sold in Canada and we are asking for your help.
We are currently holding online consultations (until September 11) on changes to food labels at the Health Canada website: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/
Canadian children are being diagnosed with conditions previously only seen in adults, such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
Our sincere hope is that we can help consumers avoid these unfortunate situations by providing information designed to assist them in making smart choices. Healthy eating plays a huge role in good health.
One of the changes we are proposing involves the grouping of all sugars into one category under the common name “sugar” to help consumers to quickly determine the level of sugar in each product.
We would also establish a “Daily Value” for total sugars in a product. This would provide the ability to quickly ascertain whether a product was high in sugar.
Another proposed change involves the creation of a standard serving size, to make it easier for consumers to compare similar products.
Helping consumers stay informed about what they are putting into their bodies is important to our government.
By making informed choices we can build a healthier and stronger future for Canada.
