Labour Day is more than just a holiday. It is an important opportunity to highlight the vital role that Canadian workers have played in our economic development and potential for innovation.
It is important to acknowledge the contributions of the women and men who fought for the rights of working people which we all benefit from today.
It is important to recognize the solid foundation laid by unions, which work for a safe workplace, the right to negotiate, employment equity, and the hope of a retirement in dignity for today’s workers.
Unfortunately many of the rights that we enjoy today continue to come under attack.
This year it is particularly important to focus on the major cuts to Canada Post that will impact on many Canadians, including here in the North. It is important to work with our postal workers to save this vital service.
We have to continue to fight not only to protect the rights we have but work to enhance them in the future.
