A record 2,599 doctors are now practising in Manitoba, a stat that has the NDP government eager to take credit. The province announced the milestone in a news release that credits its expansion of the University of Manitoba's medical school, creation of recruitment grants and building and renewing of hospitals. The current total of 2,599 practising doctors across Manitoba is 61 higher than last year. The province said its investments in expanding medical school spaces to 110 students per year has been an important step forward. 'In addition to expanding the medical school, we have also expanded the number of medical residencies to accommodate medical graduates from other jurisdictions,' Health Minister Theresa Oswald said in the release. Earlier this year, the NDP government announced $4.3 million to create 15 new medical residencies, including several in rural communities. With a record 136 residency positions available this year and 105 graduating medical students, there is now more capacity to accept graduates from outside Manitoba.
