Flin Flon constituency is full of wonderful people, and Manitobans from our communities continue to make us all proud of their achievements.
Two such people are Brad Cromarty and Jennifer Milton, who brought home a number of medals from the Special Olympics Manitoba Summer Games, held in Brandon this June. Their perseverance, dedication, and performances were something we can all celebrate.
Our youth also continue to show great talent and determination. One example of this is Carson Lee. Carson followed in his brother Hunter’s footsteps and travelled to Athens this summer to wrestle in a major competition, and they both medalled at the Summer Games this year.
On the cultural side, local author Harry Hobbs recently published a new book, Circle of Roots. I was pleased to attend his book signing, and I encourage everyone to grab a copy from the Flin Flon Public Library or one of our local stores, like Northern Rainbow’s End.
Last week, I was able to connect with many community leaders, people, coffee shops, and residents as I travelled to South Indian Lake, Leaf Rapids, and Lynn Lake. It was good to hear firsthand about their situations. While talking with Arvel Spence, I learned that her son, whom I honoured for his success at a skills competition last spring, is now applying the knowledge he gained from Frontier Collegiate Institute, back home. It’s always nice to hear stories about programs, like FCI, that advance the skills of our northern workforce.
I also spoke with Northern Manitobans about the pressing issues their communities face. They have been waiting for some attention, but while the government proposes a plan to have a plan, there continues to be no action.
Clean drinking water is an essential need, and a basic human right, yet Lynn Lake and Leaf Rapids both have boil water advisories. We need to have the infrastructure invested so that all northern communities have access to safe drinking water. Safe roads are also a major concern. Regardless of whether tourism will be a major part of the government’s plan, the horrendous conditions of some of Thompson’s essential roads is unacceptable. I can personally attest to the unsafe condition of the Life is a Highway path to Lynn Lake. Tourists will not travel far on this road a second time.
We need the Premier to stop just looking north and start acting. I will continue to advocate for this by fighting for good jobs, worker safety, better healthcare, and accessible education in northern Manitoba.
