Manitoba government has rejected funding for Seniors Housing

What do YOU think? The Manitoba government has rejected funding to turn the old Flin Flon Hotel into seniors’ housing. Are you disappointed or looking forward to a different location (hopefully) being chosen?

Without actually knowing the province’s reasoning, it’s difficult to assess the merits of their decision one way or another without diving into speculation.
It would be nice if there was more transparency on that point, but the fact that they’re evaluating proposals says there’s a decent chance there’s another proposal that could be more in line with what the province has in mind.
It’s an obvious need in the community, and the province has developed programs and spent money here in the past, so it’s reasonable to think that rejecting the current proposal regarding the Flin Flon Hotel isn’t the end of the matter by any means.

Personally, I think the Flin Flon Hotel would have been a perfect place for a seniors’ residence.
Close to all the amenities, it is located in a pretty interesting part of town. Housebound seniors could enjoy viewing events at Pioneer Square, watching the action on Main Street or enjoying a visit with friends in a coffee shop downstairs.
Unfortunately, though large sums of taxpayer money leave here each and every year, the request for funding has been turned down with no real reason given why. We need strong municipal leadership here and until that happens, we will sit on the backburner of government.

The old Flin Flon Hotel has been empty for 15 years now and even an up-to $1.58-million government cheque to turn this into a seniors’ complex may not be wise.
There are better places for seniors to live other than Main Street; however, I am disappointed that a new seniors’ complex is not definitively in the works at any location.
We have a long waiting list of seniors looking for retirement housing. Looks like they will have to wait a little longer or move away. Evergreen Manor is a popular choice; we could use this as a model for the next complex.
