Culture Days is back and this year in Flin Flon, it’s larger than ever.

This probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise - last year Flin Flon had the third-largest Culture Days event in Canada and placed first overall among communities with 50,000 or fewer residents.

The driving forces behind Culture Days in Flin Flon are always pushing to increase the number of events, and this year has been no exception. The goal was 120 events, but this weekend, organizers will surpass that.

This is the part that is truly amazing - more than 120 events over three days means an astounding amount of people have dedicated their time and talent over the weekend to showcase the super cool skills, stories, products, entertainment and activities they and their community have to offer.

The buy-in from locals and people from outside the community alike is a huge testament to the joyful celebration of our talented and interesting community that Culture Days is.

Culture, in its many forms, is one of the large draws of living in this part of the country, at present and in the past. Culture has been a huge part of Flin Flon’s history.

The importance of culture in Flin Flon goes back at least as far as the early days of mining and exploration in town. People of all backgrounds were hired to come here to work in the mine, but if a person could play an instrument or was skilled on skates or brought some other form talent to town, they may have been bumped to the top of the hiring list.

Mining brought the money to this area, but culture – be it music or dancing, hockey or billiards, visual art or any other number of leisure pursuits – is what brought the fun.

Many of the most captivating stories of years gone by are about great feats and great laughs that happened in the miners’ spare time. The spirit of community is found in stories that evolved around Flin Flon’s culture.

The same rings true today – culture in all its forms is such a part of Flin Flon’s identity. Mining and exploration still brings money to the area, but it’s the culture that brings the fun. And  we have a ton of it, if Culture Days is any indication. Our culture is something to be proud of.

There are more than 100 events to take in this weekend - be sure to take in a few and experience just a piece of the culture that Flin Flon has to offer.
