Dear Editor,

Snow Lake is very excited to say that we have made the top 10 finals for a chance to win $25,000 in the Manitobaville contest.

But we cannot do it alone – we are the only ones in the North competing against some much larger communities; therefore, we need the support of the North. We need to show the province that the North works together.

With the winnings, we will be doing a much-needed beach enhancement. How did this come to light? A few of us pondered the idea back in June. Each waited for the other to do something with it.

I thought to myself, “I cannot sit here and let 25 grand go by without trying to do something.”

So I turned to Facebook, as our chairperson for the Beach Enhancement Committee was out of town, as were some other committee members.

So my work began. I started asking for someone to shoot the video for us; they would have to know the ins and outs of making a video to be able to edit it and make it send-in ready.

I found local Garry Zamzow. It was a very busy weekend here in Snow Lake, what with Pioneer Days in full swing at the South End and a local mud bog. I called local Deva Andrechuk to see if she would come and help me; she was very happy to do so.

Sharon Meuse and April Hart at the Town of Snow Lake Town Office were “Johnny-on-the-spot” to help me make posters and put the event on the Town of Snow Lake’s website.

The time to make the video was set for Saturday, August 1 at 10 am. It was a very windy, chilly morning, but around 30 people from the community showed up.

At the last minute, approximately 60 people from Thompson, Winnipeg and Brandon arrived. They have been coming to Snow Lake for the last few years on the same weekend. They were very excited to be involved.

Our video was made showcasing most of our beach area. Garry took it home and went to work editing it.

On Sunday just after lunchtime, he called and said, “We are ready to go!” I called Deva and she submitted the video to the Manitobaville contest. I got a call on Monday saying that they wanted it to be YouTube-ready. Deva did this and now, here we are.

We have until Friday, August 21 at noon to vote. We are asking that surrounding areas please support us.

You can vote once a day from each of your e-mail addresses at each of these websites:
