Letter to the Editor: Stuck motorist thankful for help

Dear Editor,

On Wednesday, Nov. 19, I drove a 15-passenger van (full of high school girls) from Swan River to Flin Flon for the AAA Volleyball Provincials.

It was an ugly drive in winter conditions with an average speed of 80 km/h, but I was very relieved when we pulled into the hotel that evening. After getting the girls checked in and headed to their rooms, I returned to the van to park behind the hotel.

After a long day of snow accumulation, the van was stuck in snow with a thin layer of ice below.

The stress of the day likely showed on my face (yes, I was in tears), and the helpful desk clerk mentioned that the Flin Flon Minor Hockey Association board was having a meeting at the hotel.

We knocked on the door of the meeting and found great sympathy for a woman in tears. I think it was six men that immediately jumped up to put their coats on to help push my 15-passenger van safely out of the snow, so I could park for the night.

I apologize for not getting their names to identify them personally, so I’m hoping the newspaper editor will consider sharing this.

My husband and I will be returning to Flin Flon for the Atom tourney in early January and hope we will meet up with some of the wonderful Good Samaritans again to further thank them.

Not only did my SVRSS volleyball team have a great experience in your community (first trip to Flin Flon for some), but we were very impressed with the well-organized event courtesy of the host committee chaired by Dean Grove and Amy Olenick.

We also experienced the feel of what great and caring people live in Flin Flon / Creighton! Hats off to Flin Flon for a fantastic event.
