Dear Editor,

I was interested to read The Reminder’s editorial position on Justin Trudeau’s stance on abortion (“Veering off centre,” June 27).

On the face of it, it is indeed surprising to to see Mr. Trudeau taking a position that seems to fly in the face of freedom of conscience.

I think there is a much more pragmatic explanation. Mr. Trudeau understands that abortion in Canadian politics is now a non-issue.

Regardless of people’s individual opinions, the constitution is clear that women have the ultimate say. If people are not prepared to recognize this, then he does not want them in his caucus.

Essentially, parliament has more important business than flogging dead horses!

The legislation provides that women are the ultimate arbiters of what happens with their bodies. It does not dictate that every woman must have an abortion.

Mr. Trudeau is not “veering off centre,” he is just pointing out how ridiculous it is to keep debating things that are constitutionally settled.
