Dear Editor, Recently, Nunavut hosted its first ever National sport championship event. From November 8-15, Iqaluit was the host city of the 2009 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. The Iqaluit Curling Club was the host club, and provided a pool of four spares for the 12 competing teams to use if needed. Former Flin Flon resident Ed Sattelberger has been a volunteer with the Iqaluit Curling Club since his move north in 2006. Ed was selected as one of the spares for the national championship event. He also volunteered his time to help with ice installation and overall ice maintenance during the event. Team Quebec called upon Ed to spare as a second during the championship. Ed became the first Nunavut resident to participate in a national curling championship! In typical understated fashion, Ed though he had a rough game yet Quebec won the game. He ended up curling second (according to the CCA stats people) to the curler who won the All-star Award for Seconds, Jason Jacobson, another curler with Flin Flon-Creighton area roots. JasonÕs family is from Denare Beach. Team Manitoba went on to win the 2009 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. Ed was always active in the local curling community in Flin Flon. He was on the organizing committee for the Flin Flon MenÕs Bonspiel for several years and moving north he has continued that trend of volunteering. He gives his time to the Iqaluit Curling Club as an ice technician, and works with the junior curlers in teaching them strategy when he can. I am very proud to say Ed is my husband! Ed has family and friends in the Flin Flon area. Karen Costello
