Dear Editor: We, the Recreation Leadership class, were very disappointed to receive the message about not being able to proceed with our snowboarding event for Bust the Winter Blues Festival. Apparently, the reason we are unable to hold this event is because of the insurance situation. We had initially made arrangements to have the event at the hill in Creighton (Red Mountain) because we thought we could receive insurance; however, two weeks before the festival we were informed otherwise. Our class, other volunteers and community Rec leaders put in numerous hours preparing and constructing the hill during class as well as on their own time. The Town of Creighton even helped out by hauling snow over to the area. This led to the Town having to destroy the hill that we built so nobody could use it. Over the last couple months we have been organizing this event by going to each of the schools with surveys to find out the interest. There was an outstanding amount of participants who owned snowboards (which was essential) and a number of willing volunteers. Our promotions were done on the radio; posters were made, sponsorships and donations for prizes were solicited. Not only did this disappoint us, but also all the participants/volunteers and the community were let down as well. As a class, we are trying to learn how to become positive role models and create recreational activities to enhance the lifestyle of people in our community. Unfortunately it seems that, it is getting more difficult to plan activities for people our age because of all the red tape. Recreational Leadership Class Many Faces/Hapnot Educations
