Editor: The Flon Flon Curling Club herein expresses our support for the Community Plex project. We acknowledge that a project of this magnitude would have substantial benefits for our members and the greater communities it would serve. Our region has a legacy rich in cultural and recreational activities and curling has been a significant part of this tradition. We are however faced with the reality that our facilities are aging and there has been much discussion and debate about what the future holds for us. The realization of a state-of-the-art facility would undoubtedly promote the longevity of curling in our communities. The Community Plex would provide us with a highly efficient and pleasing environment for a reasonable capital investment. It also presents an opportunity to partner with other user groups to share ongoing operational expenses. This would ensure that user fees are manageable and promotes participation and accessibility for community members. Curling is an active sport that has long reaching physical, social and emotional benefits for its members and for the community as a whole. The design of the complex would increase exposure to our sport and has the capacity to draw membership and possibly enhance our existing Junior Curling Program. A new facility would also increase the potential to draw larger curling events to our area, which would have a broader impact on our economy and tourism. We are aware that the challenges faced by curlers are not unique or isolated. Our communities are faced with a progressive decline in the quality and availability of recreational and cultural opportunities due to aging infrastructure. As a community group we recognize that in order to ensure that we and the generations to follow are extended the ongoing benefits of culture and recreation that we must build a sustainable foundation. The development of a Community Plex would address the needs of our communities by providing a broad range of services that would enhance the holistic well being of community members of all ages. The alternative, to watch the steady decline, is not palatable and would have a severe impact on the health of our communities. Taking a proactive approach demonstrates responsible ownership and commitment to our own well being. The Community Plex project also represents a uniquely collaborative inter-provincial process. It unites us in a common goal that is pursued by local community groups and municipal and provincial levels of government. Historically we have all benefited from opportunities made available on each side of the border and the Community Plex project presents an opportunity to build something substantial together. As curlers we are optimistic and hopeful that the Community Plex will become a reality. We are supportive and feel that our members have already taken measures to demonstrate this. We look forward to ongoing collaboration with the Community Plex committee in the pursuit of quality recreational and cultural opportunities for all community members. Sincerely, The Flin Flon Curling Club Executive
